Dune Could Make $1 Billion at Box Office
“The upcoming science-fiction movie Dune by filmmaker Denis
Villeneuve has potential to collect over $1 billion if theatrically released,”
said one of the box office analysts.
The movie is an adaptation
of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel of the same name. It has a massive cast,
including Rebecca Ferguson, Timothee Chalamet, Josh Brolin, Oscar Isaac, Dave
Bautista, Stellan Skarsgard, Zendaya, Stephen Mckinley Henderson, Sharon Ducan-Brewster,
Jason Momoa, and Charlotte Rampling.
The movie will only contain
half of the novel, although it is unclear where the film will end. The plot of
Dune is set in the future and revolves around Duke. He accepts the management
of Dune, a dangerous planet Arrakis. Dune is a source of a valuable element
known as ‘the spice,’ a drug that can increase human life. It also enables
humans to move faster than the light and provides an intelligence level of
superhuman.
David Lynch tried to adapt
the novel Dune in 1984 but failed miserably. Hence Warner Bros. is very anxious
about the movie and does not want to take any chances with the project. The
film is made under a massive budget of $200 million, so the production house
avoids all possible risk factors. It also postponed the movie’s release date,
and WB is ready to take any step to ensure the project’s financial success.
Recently, box office
analyst Paul Dergarabedian said that despite the tough time and ongoing
pandemic situation, Villeneuve’s adaptation would do around $1 billion
box-office collection. He also said the delay in the release date might help
create hype around the film, ultimately generating the audience’s curiosity.
And the situation of COVID-19 is expected to get better around next October. Warner
Bros.’s confidence in the project will help gain viewers’ trust and bring them
to the theatres.
However, another box office
analyst, Jeff Bock’s opinion, differs; he said the movie’s success is at high
stake. Dune is a big-budget movie, and its franchise’s fate depends on the
reasonable business of the film. Bock added that Warner Bros. wants to create
it as their Star Wars. However, the production is fighting an uphill battle
because the movie lacks the mainstream appeal despite the great content and storyline.
With the reputed filmmaker
Villeneuve, the film has great actors. Hopefully, the mainstream viewers will
also welcome the masterpiece like Dune with an open heart.
