Find Out How Much RAM Your Computer Has

It is a cakewalk to check the amount of RAM in your computer. If you are a Windows 10 user, simply press Win + PAUSE on your keyboard. The screen that appears, will tell the capacity of your installed RAM, and also your processor name and operating system type. If you open the taskbar by pressing Ctrl + Shift + ESC on your keyboard, you will get the information about the number of slots you have, the kind of RAM you have (DDR3 or DDR4), how much is available, and the clock speed per slot. If you own a Mac, then navigate to the Apple menu and select “About This Mac” to know their chipset information and RAM values.

How to Find Out the Maximum RAM Your Computer Can Support

Windows

To determine the maximum RAM capacity on Windows operating system, use the command mentioned below in the Command prompt:

wmic memphysical get MaxCapacity, MemoryDevices

Once you enter the command, you will get the final value for maximum capacity in kilobytes which can be converted to gigabytes (divide the value by 1048576 to convert KB to GB) and the number of memory devices (slots) available. For example, you get:

MaxCapacity- 8388608

MemoryDevices- 2

This means that your maximum RAM capacity is 8 GB divided into two memory slots. Meaning, the maximum RAM capacity per slot is 4GB (8/2)

macOS

As compared to Windows, macOS provides its RAM details very easily. All you have to navigate to “About This Mac” to learn about your memory module type and speed, how many RAM slots are there on your Mac, and which slots are in use. To do so:

Step 1. Navigate to the Apple menu and open “About this Mac.”

Step 2. Select “More Info … ” to get System Information.

Step 3. Under the “Memory” tab, you will find all the required information about your Mac RAM, including the type of RAM it accepts, maximum capacity, and used memory slots.

If you find out that your computer can support more RAM than it already has, goes ahead and upgrade your RAM to give your computer a performance boost.
